Sport
Potchefstroom Central School offers Athletics during the first and fourth terms.
Children who participate in cross country have a chance to experience real running and develop an incredible level of fitness and perseverance. We have a very successful and fun cross-country program at Potch Central and have achieved well since we started with all of our runners participating at National level. We are a proud cross-country team!
MINI HOCKEY
Mini-hockey is offered to children aged between 6 and 10 years old. It is here, where the fundamental skills are practised. The core focus is for the players to have fun while equipping them with the necessary skills needed in the senior teams. Junior hockey definitely adds value to any child’s life, through social interaction and physical development.
On average Potchefstroom Central School has about 40 boys and girls who participate in practices twice a week for 45 minutes. One practice is dedicated to basic skills development, while the other is solely for matches. The school takes part in mini hockey tournaments which is the perfect place to show everyone how much we’ve learnt while having the time of our lives.
SENIOR HOCKEY
The motto that the senior hockey teams lives by is “hard-work plus discipline equals enjoyment”.
Senior hockey is offered to children aged between 11 and 13 years old. In order for the children to improve and progress beyond the basic skills, Potchefstroom Central School works together with student coaches who play hockey for the local North-West University. With the student’s expertise in the ever-evolving sport, the girls and boys’ senior hockey teams compete in the North West Hockey League, as well as other tournaments over the course of the season.
The hard-work and enjoyment are reflected in the number of provincial representatives from our school. These players practise with the provincial team, in addition to the school team, because they participate in the national provincial tournaments across the country.
Over the last year alone our hockey has gone from strength to strength and the participation numbers have increased dramatically, proving that there is not only a competitive nature but also a social vibe at hockey.

The School’s first league mini-cricket team emerged as the winners of the Motara trophy in 2011. We believe in laying a strong foundation and to develop a love for this gentlemen’s game at a young age. We have a large number of mini-cricketers attending practice twice a week at Central.
Central started Girls cricket in 2023 and went on to play in The Primary schools’ league final at the end of the season. A remarkable achievement. 4 of our Central girls were selected for NW u/13 i. 2023 as well. We are very proud of our boys and girls who represented North West in various age-groups.
Tokelo Mosala is just one of our success stories! She was the first girl to play in our first cricket team in 2010. She represented the NW Senior women’s cricket team and took her first fiver against Free State while in grade 8. She is currently a coach at Ikageng HUB and at DJCA. We are very proud of her. Many of our ex-cricketers represent their current high schools at Provincial level as well.
Central School participates in the Potchefstroom Primary School’s league. Our u/11 boys won the final in 2023 and was crowned league winners. Our u/13 boys were runners-up in 2023.
Many of our cricketers also took part in the North – West Cricket Junior league during the first term of 2024 when they played for DJCA. The DJCA u/13’s won the league and u/11’s came 2nd. Our Central boys and girls did very well. The Central cricketers also enjoy the opportunity of playing schools from around the province and our first team went on tour in 2023. Our coaches are all CSA qualified.
Central cricketers actively participate in cricketing events taking place at North West Cricket, e.g. the school’s bash (pro 20), as well as girls’ coaching clinics presented by SA women’s cricket team and also England women’s cricket teams. Our cricketers listened to various international cricketers who spoke at Central in the past such as inspiration (Garnett Kruger, CharlLangeveldt, Craig Alexander and even Hansie Cronje were some of the guest speakers). Our cricketers also get the opportunity to meet and to be coached by some of our provincial cricketers. We at Central School strive to uphold and promote the positive values associated with the spirit of cricket!
We are proud to say that at Central school we don’t like cricket, we LOVE it!
We cater for boys’ soccer, and we compete in the local Soccer tournaments. Soccer is one of our most popular sports in Primary School.
